The difficulty of finding book loving friends . . .

Okay, so over my many years of reading and extreme fangirling, I've come to the conclusion that it's quite difficult to a) find friends who actually like to read, b) find friends who like to read the same books as you, and c) find friends who read the same books as you AND agree's on everything else (i.e. OTPs, story line, cliff hangers). This, was the main reason I created this blog in the first place. Not only so I could share my love of reading and all things related, but so I (and you) can know that I'm not alone in the world of shipping Katniss and Gale occasionally, or loving the cliches in Eleanor & Park.

1. Finding friends who actually like to read
Finding book-loving friends in today's society is hard. Everywhere you look, people are on their phones, most likely texting, checking the latest feeds, or reading amazing blogs such as The Bookworm of Green Gables; but one thing they're not doing, is reading books. One of my pet hates yet is something I hear constantly is, "OMG I hate reading, why wouldn't you just watch the movie?"

Well I have a question for you movie-loving-book-hating-person, why wouldn't you just read the book? Huh? It's got all the extra scenes, the scenery's is more exciting and the character's are humorous, and chances are the author can show emotions much better than the actor / actress can *cough* Kristen Stewart. It really dulls my sparkle when I tell people something and then they go "oh ... So you read? I can't stand it - it makes my eyes hurt and I can't sit still long enough. They're just so boring!"

2. Finding friends who read the same books as you
One of the best feelings in the world when you can talk about books to someone without them complaining.
Being able read the best book in the world then being able to pass it on to a friend is like handing over all your emotions to your best friend, without them realising. These people are sooooo hard to find, because realistically, it's hard enough finding people who even like books in the first place.

3. Finding friends who agree with you
Don't you just hate it when you've finished your book, feelings about it still fresh to your mind. So you text your friend, who's also read the same book, and pour your heart and soul out about an OTP, or the way that Paper Towns ended, or even if you love or hate a character! Then they text back, and the first thing you notice is "but I hate how" or just "no."You go from extreme fangirl to lawyer in a split second, and you no longer see them as your friend, but your worst enemy. Now, of course, you don't really feel this way about them, but when you're in the moment, nothing matters more than defending. This. Book.
OR the complete opposite happens: you text them, then they send you back a 500 essay about how much they love the rare OTP, and think the ending is absolutely perfect, and you all live happily ever after!
Personally, I wish everyone could be a 3 - but hey, we can't wish for everything.

Happy reading,
The Bookworm :)

If you have read my blog before, you will be aware for my love of the series, Divergent. I never thought I would find a better book, but alas, I have! In fact, when my best friend asked for a way to describe my feelings for this books, all I could get out was "I don't even know where to start -  there are no words for such a feeling!" You may find it hard to believe, seeing that Spark is Rachael Craw's debut novel, but it is quite possibly the best book I have EVER read! Spark tells a thrilling tale through the eyes of 17 year old, Evangeline. Living with her aunt, and still grieving the passing of her mother, Evangeline goes through some life changing transformations, including superhero strength, model-worthy height and looks, and an invisible cord tugging her towards the next victim, giving her a mother-hen instinct on the victim's every move to protect them from danger.

It's wonderful to finally find such a brilliant book in modern day. There are so many Young Adult novels being released these days, which I adore, but are set far ahead in the future. This is set in today's day and age, and therefore making it feel like it's possible that you could be Evangeline! Not to mention that she has awesome friends and has the best come backs ever! "Is there a name for your problem?"

And finally the love interest - Jamie - who in my opinion is the best bloke out of all of the book boyfriends I have ever laid eyes on. The speech and conversations are perfect and realistic between the two (which makes it 10 times easier to imaging that I'm actually Evangeline speaking to  gorgeous Jamie)!

This book is better than Divergent. Better than the Hunger Games. Better than the creations of books themselves! (which could get complicated ... because without the marvellous invention, would Spark even exist?!) I couldn't recommend a book anymore to anyone at all! This book is bæ, this book is life! This book deserves to be bought!

Happy reading,
The Bookworm :)

Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows. After their all-nighter ends, and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they're for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees the girl he thought he knew... -- Goodreads description

_____________

From the moment you first flick through the pages of Quentin's of ordinary world, you are sucked in by the portal of vacuuming pages.

Quentin's world is so ordinary, so simple. So the minute you begin reading, you don't feel like your in different world, it just that you're still on Earth, just in a different body. When your life dramatically changes with a chance at getting your lifetime crush and next door neighbour, and when she wisks you off for a night of revenge and adventure, you're thrilled! But when you find out that there's a possibility that Margo was with you that night only because she thought you were the only one that could handle what's to come, your life alters hugely, and the emotional roller coaster begins (and unfortunately for us, it's not Ausgustus Water's roller coaster that only goes up, my friend). No, this ride takes you on ups and downs, loop-the-loops, and goes off the rails. This masterpiece makes you laugh at the humour of the characters, be afraid of what's coming next, and tortures you into thinking the worst - but it's worth it. I would praise this book to anyone who loves a good teen mystery, or anyone who just wants to laugh every couple of pages.  John Green displays his amazing talent in every book he writes, showing his humour, fun, and romantic side to the word. So please, bring some adventure into your world and pick up Paper Towns - you won't regret it.

Happy Reading.

Cath and Wren are identical twins, and until recently the did absolutely everything together. Now they're off to university and Wren's decided she doesn't want to be one half of a pair any more - se want's to dance, meet boys, go to parties and let loose. It's not so easy for Cath. She's horribly shy and has always buried herself in the fan fiction she writes, where she always knows exactly what to say and can write a romance far more intense than anything she's experienced in real life.

Without Wren Cath is completely on her own and totally outside her comfort zone. She's got a surly room-mate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

Now Cath has to decide whether she's ready to open her heart to new people and new experiences, and she's realizing that there's more to learn about love than she ever thought possible . . .

__________

Okay - first I'd like to apologise for my lack of updates lately. I didn't want to post for no reason, but I wanted to post yet I had no reason.
This book took me about two weeks to finish because I was trying to soak in every single aspect of it! Every character, every place. Every scene and every conversation and every thought was completely realistic - which is a theme  that I've noticed among Rowell's novels.
Fangirl had all the characteristics of a soap-opera, but it was less soap-opera-ish. There was always something going on in Cath's plain lifestyle that isn't too unbelievable, creating a deep connection between myself and the her. Although sometimes it's a little bit cliche, I didn't really care, because really, who actually minds a tiny bit of cliche? From the beginning Fangirl was the type of book that pulled you in. Immediately you fell in love with the characters, and only wanted the best for them. Every character is amazing, there's not one part of them that you feel like you don't really know. This book has a place in my heart now, I didn't want it to end. Cath's life, writing, english, fan fiction, is very similar to mine, and it's something that I don't find commonly in books.

In everyone's life, certain chapters will always come to an end, just like Cath and Wren's first year at college. And like always, not everyone's chapter ended perfectly, which is refreshing to see in a modern-day book, instead of every character living happily ever after.

I hope that you do give this amazing book a chance - it most definitely deserves it!
Happy reading,

CARRY ON WILL BE A BOOK!

To anyone who's read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, (my review will be up very soon), and loved it even half as much as I did, you will be excited to hear that Cath's fanfic Carry On, from her favourite book series Simon Snow, will be a book coming out in October this year!!!!
This tweet was released on the 10th of December 2014, and I can't believe I hadn't heard it sooner. It's such exciting news, and if it's anything like Rowell's previous books, it will be FABULOUS! I was literally sitting here the other day thinking, what if Simon Snow was real, and not just that, if Carry On was real! I guess dreams really do come true! Who else is thrilled?!

Two misfits.
One extraordinary love.

Eleanor
... Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough...Eleanor.

Park... He knows she'll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There's a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises...Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.

Eleanor is the new girl in town, and with her chaotic family life, he mismatched clothes and unruly red hair, she couldn't stick out more if she tried.

Park is the boy at the back of the bus. Black t-shirts, headphones, head in a book - he thinks he's made himself invisible. But not to Eleanor . . . never to Eleanor.

Slowly, steadily, through late-night conversations and an ever-growing stack of mix tapes, Eleanor and Park fall for each other. They fall in love the way you do the first time, when you're young, and you feel as if you have nothing and everything to loose. -- Book blurb

Now, just to clear myself up -  the 6/5 star rating is not a typo. Yes, I really did love the book sooooo much I felt the need to rate it more than the average 5 stars.
I believe that from the very start of a book, you should feel a connection -  something to keep you reading. And with Eleanor & Park, right from the beginning I fell in love with this book. You got to know the characters at a steady rate, so you could really, really relate to everyone, and it has everything ticked off on my list of what I think makes a good book.  In the first 90 pages, I felt the need to rant about the book so far, and trust me, I ranted. You can read the rant here. So quite literally, it was love at first sight. Nothing about this book gives you the feeling it's been rushed, everything happens at it's own pace. It's a very natural book, and you can expect everything to Eleanor and Park to happen in real life.

This book has it's own cool qualities because it's set in 1986. They have problems different to ours these days. I found this made it much more interesting. It didn't have the same problems that you see in every contemporary love story. It really made itself feel separate and different compared to the other books on my shelf. Even if you, personally, have read a 1980's love story with bullying, music, and life, you still would never have read a book the same or better, than Eleanor & Park. - I loved it!

Because the novel was told from the point of view, (but in the third person) of both Eleanor and Park, it made it so that you knew the two main characters the best you could. You got to see their home life, their school life, and know exactly what they're thinking in that head of theirs at all times. You loved certain characters and you hated certain characters, depending on what they thought. Everything that they feel, you most certainly feel, even the first hand hold, you knew exactly how it felt.

As John Green said 'Reminded me not just what it's like to be young and in love with a girl, but also what it's like to be young and in love with a book' which I find, is completely true. While reading the book, you feel every emotion, so you feel like you're in love. And when you feel like your in love because of a book, you can't help but fall for the book as well, it's like a package.

In conclusion, I thought  Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell was a marvellous book, and would recommend it to anyone who loves romance and YA genres. Or just anyone looking for a fun, light book to read.
I also believe, that if you don't read this book, you're truly missing out, because even if you hate it, at least you can most likely relate to it, or hate / like a character. I can almost guarantee, they'll be at least one thing about this book you like.

I hoped this helped some of you with your book reading choices,
Happy reading,
The Bookworm! :)

Eleanor and Park- pages 1-90 - a rant!

WARNING! BE PREPARED TO READ A RANT BY A PROFESSIONAL FANGIRL! ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Hello everyone! If you didn't already know, I recently began to read Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. This may not be very many pages for some of you, but in the first sitting, I read 90 pages. Immediately, from the first line "XTC was no good for drowning out the morons at the back of the bus." to the last line I read "He started singing his number to the tune of '867-5309', which cracked her right up.", I smiled till the cows came home. And I don't have cows, so they can't come home... Basically, I haven't stopped smiling! :)

You know that feeling where after you finish a book, you have a feeling of wholeness. Like your life is complete since you read the book? Yeah, well I've felt like that for the past 20 minutes since putting down the book! On the cover, there's a quote by John Green, saying "Reminded me not just what t's like to be young and in love with a girl, but also what it's like to be young and in love with a book." And it's completely true. I know remember what it feels like to be in love with a book. I'd forgotten about it, maybe the last time I truelt felt it was when I read The Wishing Chair by Enid Blyton, I don't know, but I still know what it's like to be in love... With a book.

Most people describe love as: Every time I think about him, I grin a cheesy grin. My mind wanders, and I stare off out the window, looking at the flower-filled meadow that so-and-so and I could be running through, holding hands, me wearing a white dress and flowers decorating my curled hair, him wearing a suit pants and shirts, both looking like we're from the 1800's. Well, my love isn't wearing slacks. It's wearing a paper back cover, and whispers me words that makes dissolve at the sound. This book makes me happy even at the sight of it... I know this sounds weird but... I think I'm in love! No! Only kidding, but I feel a connection with this book I've never felt before with any other book. Wow! I must sound crazy!

When Eleanor talks about Park, I find myself falling for him. But then that feeling turns weird and kind of disgusted when it goes back to his point of view. It, in a way, feels like I'm falling for someone else and then myself... If that makes sense to any of you who have actually read the book - and if you haven't, then I probably sound absolutely INSANE!

This was a bit of a silly, weird post, and it truly was rant! I must've sound mental when you were reading it, but I just had to get my words out there. Am I the only wacky one out there? Let me know in the comments below what you thought of the first 90 pages of Eleanor and Park - this beautiful, beautiful book!

The Bookworm! :) :) :) :) :)  (5 smiles to show my enthusiasm for the book!)

Quote of the Day

'Because . . .' he said quietly, looking at his desk, 'because people want to remember what it's like to be young? And in love?' - Park - Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

I first read this quote today, and I felt my heart start to melt. It's the type of quote that makes you fall in love with a book! The type that made me want to read the book forever.

__________________________________

Pretty Little Liars (book #1) by Sara Shepard, is practically the same as Episode 1, Season 1 of Pretty Little Liars the TV Series, but better! This book is perfect for fans of the TV show, as it has extra details about the liars, and you know their exact thoughts.

The book is told from the point of view of '-A', and tells a story features four pretty girls of Rosewood, each one you want to be, but each one with a personal secret that only Alison knew about, who used to be close, all because of Ali. But after Ali's disappearance, the drifted apart, barely even speaking to one another in the school's halls.

Pretty Little Liars had a feel to it, making you care about each girl, making you want to be their friend. The book starts off very similarly to the TV series, however almost straight away there are huge differences. The characters are so much younger (starts off on the last day of 7th grade), and more time has passed between the disappearance (3 years to be exact) and the -A messages. The characters look different to the way you're used to, but still own the same personalities.

Sara Shepard really knows how to write a good mystery, cool but realistic and relatable characters, and really knows how to piece a story, not just about a mystery but relationships, together. Everything fell in the right order, and I never questioned her wording or language. She used clear sentences, that were not in any way complicated, so you didn't have to whip out your pocket dictionary half way through a sentence that's telling a major clue on what happened.

I found the book a little slow to start off, as this was the point you were really getting to know the Liars, and their families, personalities, and hobbies. I didn't find it as gripping as the TV show, but by the last 100 pages things really started to pick up, and I found myself finishing it off without realising it (except I kinda expected it to as it finished at the exact same point as the TV show).
I also really liked the messages from -A, and although they were frequent, I wish there had of been more of them, or the girls discussed them. I'm not exactly sure, but I just think that there was something missing. Although I did giggle at their predictions for who they though -A could be.

I am excited to read book 2, Flawless, as I'm sure the flow of  suspense will continue.

Overall I found this an excitable book to read, and recommend it to any fan of the TV series, and anyone who wants to read a light, fun mystery of four pretty high school girls who each have a secret to hide.

Happy Reading

Quote of the Day

"When I look at my room, I see a girl who loves books." • Alaska Young • Looking for Alaska by John Green

I chose this quoted for today because, as you may know, today is Alaska Young Day, and in a way the 10th year anniversary, as the book was first published in 2005. I find this quote represents many of us Bookworms, and found it the only quote that could really suit today properly.
